Evaporator Approach

Evaporator Approach, A basic explanation

This topic is a basic description of what evaporator approach is, Its not intended to be a scientific study , just a description from a HVAC service technicians viewpoint.
Let’s start, Approach is a term that some technicians are confused about, very simply your evaporator approach
Is the chilled water outlet temperature minus your refrigerant temperature. For instance if your evaporator refrigerant saturated temperature is 38 degrees and your water outlet temperature is 45 degrees then your approach is 7 degrees.
Now you’re asking what should my approach be? Your approach needs to be measured when the chiller is at full load. Measure your approach and determine the number of times the chilled water passes through the evaporator. If you have a 1 pass evaporator your approach will be 10 degrees plus, if you have a 2 pass evaporator then your approach can be 7 to 10 degrees, 3 pass evaporators can be 3 to 6 degrees, hopefully this explanation makes approach more understandable.
